Tenor Brian Thorsett has been seen and heard in over 100 diverse operatic roles, ranging from Monteverdi to Britten, back to Rameau and ahead again to works composed specifically for his talents. As a concert singer and avid recitalist, Brian fosters a stylistically diversified repertoire of over 300 works. He is closely associated with expanding the vocal-chamber genre, premiering and commissioning many works across the US and Europe. Upcoming projects include the premiere of Ian Venables’ The Last Invocation, Gordon Getty’s Goodbye, Mr. Chips and Christopher Stark’s Scream.
He is a graduate of San Francisco Opera’s Merola Program, Glimmerglass Opera’s Young American Artist program, American Bach Soloists’ Academy, the Britten-Pears Young Artist Programme at Aldeburgh, England and spent two summers at the Music Academy of the West. Brian is currently Associate Professor of Voice at Virginia Tech’s School of Performing Arts.
Soprano Ruth Rainero holds a Master's degree in Voice Performance and Pedagogy from the Royal Conservatory of the Hague in The Netherlands, and a Bachelor's degree from the California Institute of the Arts. She speaks five languages, sings in five more and has been teaching classical voice—first in Amsterdam and then San Francisco—for twenty-five years. Her areas of expertise range from early baroque to contemporary music, and she performed throughout Europe at various international festivals with a wide range of ensembles. In Europe and the United States, Ms Rainero performed under the direction of conductors ranging from Philippe Herreweghe, Niklaus Harnoncourt and Nicholas McGegan to Steve Reich and Reinbert de Leeuw.
At her private studios in New York City and San Francisco, Ruth teaches singing, voice rehabilitation, and communication skills. She has taken courses in voice science, and can therefore combine knowledge of anatomy, acoustics, biomechanics, and vocal fold oscillation with her many years of teaching experience. In addition to her classical voice studio, Ruth receives referrals from laryngologists of both singers and non-singers suffering from muscle tension dysphonia and other voice disorders. Ruth teaches internationally, and is a featured lecturer at voice conferences throughout the United States and Europe. These include the Pan European Voice Conference, the International Voice Symposium, the Physiology and Acoustics of Singing Conference, the Pacific Voice Conference/Pixar “Emotions and the Voice”, and the UCSF Voice Conference. Before devoting herself exclusively to her private studio, Ms. Rainero was on the faculty at the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) in San Francisco, the University of California at Davis and Skyline College in San Bruno. Her students perform internationally, both on and off Broadway, and in major opera houses throughout the world.
Baritone Nikolas Nackley is in demand for his work on both the concert and operatic stage in California, the East Coast, and abroad. He has been heralded by the San Francisco Chronicle as “sonorous and heroic” and praised by the Boston Globe for his ability to “continually impress with his beautiful voice and acting.” Recently featured in the title role of West Edge Opera’s critically acclaimed Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria, last summer, Nikolas sang the role of Captain Bouchardon in the West Coast premiere Matt Mark’s opera, Mata Hari, also with West Edge Opera. Other recent credits include the role of Joe Pitt in the West Coast premiere of Peter Eötvös’s opera, Angels in America, with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, Adonis in Blow’s Venus and Adonis with Marin Baroque, Bach’s St. John Passion Mozart’s Requiem with the SF Bach Choir, Santa Clara Chorale, and Bay Choral Guild, Figaro in Paisiello’s Barber of Seville with WEO’s Opera Medium Rare, Haydn’s The Seasons and Bach’s Mass in B Minor with Marin Oratorio, the West Coast premiere of Kaija Saariaho’s The Tempest Songbook with Cal Performances and recital series in New Castle, England.
Highly sought after as vocal master teacher, vocal adjudicator, choral conductor, clinician, and director, Nikolas is on the voice and opera faculty at the School of Music at SF State University as well as UC Berkeley where he is the director of vocal studies.
